Telos Launches Trusted Setup Ceremony for Enhanced Privacy Layer

Telos has officially initiated the Trusted Setup Ceremony for its Telos Privacy Layer, marking a significant advancement in the network’s development and the broader domain of privacy-focused blockchain technology. This ceremony serves as a crucial cryptographic procedure that must be completed prior to enabling private multi-asset accounts and shielded transactions on the Telos network. Designed with privacy protection in mind, it ensures that no single entity—be it a party, organization, or even Telos itself—can undermine the privacy assurances of the system. Upon completion, the parameters generated will support the zero-knowledge (ZK) circuits, facilitating private transfers, delegated deposits, and privacy-centric interactions within the Telos ecosystem.

Leveraging Industry-Leading Security

The Telos Privacy Layer is not starting from a blank slate. It builds upon the established security framework of the Ethereum Perpetual Powers of Tau ceremony, which is widely regarded as one of the most scrutinized and collaborative multi-party computation (MPC) ceremonies ever undertaken, involving 86 independent contributors. This setup has already gained the trust of prominent ZK privacy ecosystems, including Railgun. The MPC framework only requires one honest participant to ensure the security of the final output, providing the Telos Privacy Layer with a robust foundation. The current ceremony will further enhance this security by incorporating contributions from respected members of the Telos community, including engineers, researchers, and independent advocates for privacy.

Understanding the Ceremony Process

The Trusted Setup Ceremony follows a meticulously structured process: a participant conducts a computation and adds their unique input, or entropy. This output then becomes the input for the subsequent participant. Each new contribution amplifies the overall security of the final parameters, ensuring that no single entity can reconstruct or exploit them at any point in time.

Structure of the Two-Phase Ceremony

The ceremony is divided into two distinct phases:
Phase 1: Powers of Tau
Telos enhances the security of the previous Ethereum Perpetual Powers of Tau ceremony by incorporating additional contributors from within the Telos ecosystem.
Phase 2: Circuit Parameter Generation
Participants will infuse entropy into the ZK circuits that will facilitate private accounts, shielded transfers, and delegated deposits on the Telos Privacy Layer. Completion of both phases is essential for generating the final verification keys and activating the privacy system on the mainnet.

Participation Criteria and Invitations

Members of the Telos Foundation and Protofire are already contributing to the ceremony. Furthermore, Telos is extending invitations to reliable and technically adept participants, including active block producers, long-standing community members, researchers, and privacy advocates. Interested contributors need to meet specific requirements, such as having access to:

  • A Linux machine with a minimum of 8 CPU cores
  • At least 8 GB of RAM
  • 150 GB of available storage for ceremony data
  • A clean, isolated environment devoid of unnecessary background applications
  • The capability to adhere to essential operational security protocols

Researchers, engineers, privacy advocates, or community members focused on security wishing to participate can contact Telos via Telegram or through email.

Future Prospects Post-Ceremony

Once the Trusted Setup Ceremony concludes, Telos plans to implement several features, including:

  • Private multi-asset accounts that provide quantum-hardened security
  • Shielded value transfers
  • High-performance, Layer 1-integrated private computation
  • An exceptional privacy wallet experience

These capabilities are designed to establish Telos as one of the foremost networks in the industry, geared towards mass adoption, developer accessibility, and enduring security. The ceremony is currently in progress, and Telos expresses gratitude to all contributors dedicated to securing the future of private cryptocurrency on its platform.
