Telos Launches Trusted Setup Ceremony for Enhanced Privacy Layer
Telos has officially initiated the Trusted Setup Ceremony for its Privacy Layer, marking a significant advancement for both the network and the broader landscape of privacy-focused blockchain technology. This ceremony is a crucial cryptographic step that must be completed prior to the launch of private, multi-asset accounts and shielded transactions on the Telos platform. The design ensures that the integrity of privacy guarantees remains intact, with no single participant—be it an organization, developer, or even Telos itself—able to undermine the system’s privacy features. Upon completion, the parameters established will support zero-knowledge (ZK) circuits, facilitating secure private transfers, delegated deposits, and privacy-centric interactions throughout the Telos network.
Leveraging Industry-Leading Security
Telos is building upon a robust foundation rather than starting anew. The Telos Privacy Layer is set to benefit from the security established during the Ethereum Perpetual Powers of Tau ceremony, which is renowned for its rigorous scrutiny and community participation, involving 86 independent contributors. This setup has already gained the trust of established ZK privacy frameworks, including Railgun. Under the rules of multi-party computation (MPC), the integrity of the final output is guaranteed as long as at least one contributor acts honestly, providing a solid initial security framework for the Telos Privacy Layer. The current ceremony will further bolster this security with additional contributions from reputable members within the Telos community, including engineers, researchers, and independent advocates for privacy.
Understanding the Ceremony Process
The Trusted Setup Ceremony operates through a meticulously organized, sequential methodology. Each participant performs a computation while introducing their own entropy. The output generated by one participant then serves as the input for the next, thereby enhancing the overall security of the final parameters. This structure is designed to prevent any single entity from reconstructing or exploiting the parameters, safeguarding the integrity of the system now and into the future.
Two-Phase Structure of the Ceremony
The ceremony is divided into two distinct phases:
Phase 1: Powers of Tau
In this phase, Telos builds upon the security framework of the Ethereum Perpetual Powers of Tau ceremony by incorporating additional contributors from within the Telos ecosystem.
Phase 2: Circuit Parameter Generation
During this phase, participants contribute entropy to the ZK circuits that will facilitate private accounts, shielded transfers, and delegated deposits on the Telos Privacy Layer. Both phases must be finalized to generate the verification keys needed to activate the privacy system on the mainnet.
Participation Guidelines and Requirements
The Telos Foundation and Protofire have already begun contributing to the ceremony. Telos is actively inviting other reliable and technically proficient participants, including active block producers, long-standing community members, researchers, and privacy advocates. Interested contributors should possess:
– A Linux machine with a minimum of 8 CPU cores
– At least 8 GB of RAM
– 150 GB of available storage for ceremony data
– A clean and isolated environment without unnecessary background processes
– The ability to adhere to fundamental operational security practices
Researchers, engineers, privacy advocates, or security-conscious community members wishing to participate can reach out via Telegram or email at contact@telos.net.
Future Plans Following the Ceremony
Upon completion of the Trusted Setup Ceremony, Telos intends to activate several features, including:
– Private multi-asset accounts with quantum-hardened security
– Shielded value transfers
– High-performance, Layer 1-integrated private computation
– An exceptional privacy wallet experience
These advancements are aimed at positioning Telos as a leading network in the blockchain space, focusing on mass adoption, accessibility for developers, and long-term security. The ceremony is currently in progress, and Telos extends gratitude to all contributors dedicated to enhancing the future of private cryptocurrency within the network.
