Telos Begins Trusted Setup Ceremony for Telos Privacy Layer

Telos Launches Trusted Setup Ceremony for Enhanced Privacy Layer

In a significant development for blockchain privacy, Telos has officially initiated the Trusted Setup Ceremony for its Privacy Layer. This event marks a crucial step forward in bolstering the network’s capabilities in privacy-centric blockchain technology. The ceremony is essential for enabling private multi-asset accounts and shielded transactions on the Telos platform. Its design ensures that the privacy features of the system remain intact and secure, safeguarding against any potential compromise by any single participant, including Telos itself. Upon completion, the parameters generated will serve as the foundation for the zero-knowledge (ZK) circuits that facilitate private transfers and privacy-respecting interactions within the Telos ecosystem.

Leveraging Industry-Leading Security Protocols

Telos is building on a robust security framework rather than starting anew. The Privacy Layer benefits from the established Ethereum Perpetual Powers of Tau ceremony, renowned for its rigorous scrutiny and community-driven approach, having involved 86 independent contributors. This well-established setup has already gained the trust of prominent ZK privacy ecosystems, such as Railgun. The multi-party computation (MPC) rules dictate that only one honest contributor is needed for the output’s security, providing the Telos Privacy Layer with a solid foundation. The ceremony will be further strengthened by contributions from trusted members within the Telos community, including engineers, researchers, and privacy advocates.

Understanding the Ceremony Process

The Trusted Setup Ceremony is characterized by a meticulous, sequential approach: each participant performs a computation, incorporating their own entropy, and their output serves as the input for the next participant. This collaborative process ensures that each contribution enhances the overall security of the final parameters. Such a structure guarantees that no single entity, either now or in the future, can reconstruct or exploit the parameters.

Two-Phase Ceremony Outline

The ceremony for the Telos Privacy Layer is structured into two primary phases:
Phase 1: Powers of Tau – In this phase, Telos adds more contributors from its ecosystem to bolster the security established by the previous Ethereum ceremony.
Phase 2: Circuit Parameter Generation – Participants will contribute entropy to the ZK circuits that will facilitate private accounts, shielded transfers, and delegated deposits within the Telos Privacy Layer. Both phases must be finalized before the generation of the verification keys and the activation of the privacy system on the mainnet.

Invitation for Participation

Members of the Telos Foundation and Protofire are already engaged in the ceremony. Additionally, Telos is seeking reliable and technically proficient participants, including active block producers and long-term community members, along with researchers and privacy advocates. Interested contributors should meet the following technical requirements:

  • A Linux machine with a minimum of 8 CPU cores
  • At least 8 GB of RAM
  • 150 GB of available storage for ceremony data
  • A clean and isolated environment, free from unnecessary software
  • Adherence to basic operational security practices
Researchers, engineers, privacy advocates, or security-focused community members interested in contributing can contact Telos via Telegram or email.

Future Developments Post-Ceremony

Upon the completion of the Trusted Setup Ceremony, Telos intends to implement features that include:

  • Private multi-asset accounts with quantum-hardened security
  • Shielded value transfers
  • High-performance, L1-integrated private computation
  • An advanced privacy wallet experience
These advancements are aimed at positioning Telos as a leading network in the blockchain space, focusing on mass adoption, developer-friendliness, and long-term security. The ceremony is currently in progress, and Telos expresses gratitude to all contributors working to secure the future of private cryptocurrency on the network.
